During the Battle of the Crater, Inman is injured and decides to desert the war in an attempt to make it home to Ada. On the home front, Adas father passes away, leaving her to take care of the farm. Much like many of the poised and sophisticated wealthy young women during the time, Ada soon learns that she knows nothing about survival; she can speak Latin and play piano, yet she cannot grow her own food or take care of herself. Fortunately, a kind neighbor sends her Ruby, a poor farming woman who is well-versed in taking care of herself. With Rubys help, Ada not only learns how to survive and tend the farm, but she gains confidence in herself and her ability to be useful. Though Ada learns to do it on her own, she does not want to; she still longs for Inmans return home. I would consider Cold Mountain to be historically accurate. It depicts the Civil War in the way I picture it in my head: violent, devastating, and depressing. Both the scenes from the film and the lines that are said are filled with insight into the war. One quote from Ada particularly sums up the devastation caused by the fighting, What we have lost will never be returned to us. The land will not heal too much blood. All we can do is learn from the past and make peace with it (Minghella, 2004). Adas description of ?too much blood seems fitting to when you consider all the fatalities of the war. According to American Battlefield Trust, These achievements came at the cost of 625,000 livesnearly as many American soldiers died in all the other wars in which this country has fought combined. The American Civil War was the largest and most destructive conflict in the Western world between the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 and the onset of World War I in 1914 (McPherson, 2018, paragra ph 2). Something that stuck out to me was the lack of slavery in the film. It is well known that one of the major causes of the American Civil War was the issue of slavery. History explains, The Civil War in the United States began in 1861, after decades of simmering tensions between northern and southern states over slavery, states rights and westward expansion (2018, paragraph 1). However, there is little mention of the issue in the movie. Before he passed, Adas father had had some slaves tending the farm, but she had to send them away during the war when she ran out of money. If one thinks about it, though, it does make sense that slavery did not play a key role in Cold Mountain due to the geography. Yes, North Carolina is part of the South, but the film was set in a mountainous region where plantations likely would not have been successful. There are no plantations shown in the movie, only small family farms. I think the movie is more so a depiction of life for the characters in the tow n of Cold Mountain, rather than a depiction of life in the American South in general. I am not quite sure whether I would recommend this film or not. I know that I personally cannot see myself sitting down to watch it again anytime soon. The only reason I might watch it again is to see my favorite character, Ruby, who is played by Renee Zellweger. She gives a truly one-of-a-kind performance, for which she won an Oscar for best supporting actress. While this movie does have wonderful performances by award-winning actors, I found it left me feeling disappointed. As I was watching the film, I found myself on an emotional rollercoaster. It was both gruesome and depressing, tender and intriguing. The film was slow-moving, and I am not really into historical movies, so I probably would have turned it off had I not been writing a review. Though Cold Mountain may not have been my favorite movie, I appreciate its historical accuracy and the attention to detail that went into making it. My Educational Biography Essay I was born in Manhattan NY and raised in South Jamaica Queens NY. I was put up for an adoption at 15 months and placed with an African American family. Being brought up in a black neighborhood was pretty rough for a white girl. The area I live in was hard to make friends because children assumed I through I was better than them because I had long hair and I dress nice and I talked without using curse words. When it came to high school my father decided to allow me to go to attend school in a town called Forest Hill and the name of my High School was called Forest Hills. I would have to say that the location of my high school shaped my life in many ways one being that racist still exist but not shown on the outside. I recall one day cutting class and going home early and some students walked by me and told me I did not belong there. Another time was when I watched some African American student get jumped by some white student. I have also seen African American students do some harmful things to white students as well. One of the things that bother me the most was when people would say what school do you attend and I would say Forest Hills High School and their respond would be man oh man how did you get into that school because it is a pretty wealth school designed pretty much for smart student. I will have to say that was the roughest years of school but the next three years were amazing. Well my school was located in a rich town so the parents would live there had money to put in for the students so that we would have the necessary resources to receive an education. I recall one time we needed new computer for our science lab and students spoke up and the following year we receive apple products for school. In high school I played on the basketball team, track team and I did a lot of science projected which required me to be on the road a lot. My father divorced my adopted mother and decided to get custody of all his children which that did take place but what hurt the most is because my father was a working middle class he did not have time to come to all my basketball games or track meet or to even see me present some of my science project. I knew that my father had a job but it really broke me down because he was not able to attend these function and his job gave him a hard time to even get off when he did had a chance to do so. I believe that my race play a major role in my education because it taught me to be color blind and to just love all people. I did get pick on because I was lighter and I had long hair and my father always made lunch for me to bring to school. I was always told by my adopted mother that I would never make it into college. She said I would never make it in life and how I was stupid. I am so happy that my father is no longer with this person. When it comes to my father he supported me in my education and told me that I can do whatever I wanted as long I put my mind to it. I recall telling my father that I wanted to be a doctor and he gave me his full support he did not want to see me struggle in that area of my life. When I told teachers that I wanted to go to college they told me that I can do it and told me that if I ever needed help to come back to them and they will give me a hand. I am a returning college student and I lost my job in 2011 and that was when I decided to get the rest of my education because I knew if I wanted a family that I needed an education to have the right job to start this job. I recall back at home that I needed to take a test called ACT and there was one part of the exam I could not pass no matter how hard I try I was not able to receive that 70 mark. I decided to just work and make money. I have always wanted to be a doctor growing up and I had that dream for a really long time that I can do it. Eventually I needed to stop lying to myself telling myself I can do that at the age of 26 years of age. Charlemagne Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, became the undisputed ruler of Western Europe, â€Å"By the sword and the cross.† (Compton’s 346) As Western Europe was deteriorating Charlemagne was crowned the privilege of being joint king of the Franks in 768 A.D. People of Western Europe, excluding the church followers, had all but forgotten the great gifts of education and arts that they had possessed at one time. Charlemagne solidly defeated barbarians and kings in identical fashion during his reign. Using the re-establishment of education and order, Charlemagne was able to save many political rights and restore culture in Western Europe. Early Life Charlemagne was born in 742 A.D., to a very famous and well-known family. Charlemagne’s grandfather was Charles Martel, the man who was responsible for the defeat of the Saracens. Charlemagne was also the eldest son of Bertrade (also known as Bertha Greatfoot) and Pepin the Short, the first to become king of the Franks. With the almost full extinction of schools in the 8th century, many historians say that Charlemagne received very little education, but did learn the art of reading from Bertrade. The one thing that kept Charlemagne motivated throughout his entire life was his deep devotion to the church. Charlemagne was a tall young man with light blond hair, and was described by his secretary as, â€Å"face laughing and merry. . . his appearance was always stately and dignified.† (World book 452) Charlemagne had great wit, but was stern at times. He had simple and moderate tastes; he enjoyed hunting, riding and swimming. Charlemagne had a large wardrobe with many Frankish dresses, linen shirts and breeches, silk-fringed tunics, hoses wrapped with bands, and for the winter he had coats made of otter or marten skins. Charlemagne asked his people to improve their lifestyles, but he divorced two of his four fives without any given cause. Charlemagne’s Reign In 768 A.D., Charlemagne at the age of 26, along with his brother Carloman inherited the kingdom of Franks. However, in 771 A.D. Carloman died, making Charlemagne the sole ruler of the kingdom. At this time the northern part of Europe was out of order and unruly. In the south, the Roman Catholic Church was asserting itself alongside the Lombard kingdom in Italy. While in Charlemagne’s own kingdom, the people were becoming and acting as barbarians and neglecting education and faith. But Charlemagne was determined to make his kingdom as strong as possible.

Reflexive Dialogue and Small Report

Setting of the InterviewI asked one of my friends to visit me in my place of residence to have some cup of coffee. This friend of mine came also from Saudi Arabia, and went to the university to take graduate courses. After having dinner, I asked him if he was willing to share some of his problems with me. And as a compensation for his â€Å"task†, I offered my friend the chance to read my personal narrative. This is one of the course requirements in this subject.My friend told me some of his problems. For one, he was having a little problem learning English. English for him was a very difficult subject; with clear rules on pronunciation and verb usage. He said: â€Å"English has the most number of words in all the written languages of the world; learning such would be a headache.† I agreed to the assertion of my friend. English is really a complicated language.Not only that spelling and verb-subject agreement should be taken into account, but the whole situational use o f, say, an English statement should be clearly presented (to the general audience). He added that he must take the bitter pill of learning English since this is required in the academic world. Communication today in almost any field; in the office, in the academe, took place with the assistance of the English language. The more pressing need to learn English comes from studying abroad. Almost all universities in many Western countries do not use Arabic as a means to transmit academic information. Hence, for him, learning English was an inevitable need. (I did not include his other problems in this report).I then presented my personal narrative to him and asked him to read it. After sometime, my friend finished reading my personal narrative. He was almost speechless upon reading my personal narrative. My personal narrative detailed some of my experiences of culture shock. It was an almost daily account of my activities (although the entries were irregular). Included in my personal na rrative were my experiences upon leaving the Sydney airport to studying in the university (I gave the details of some accounts in the problem-posing vignette section). Included also in the personal narratives were my personal feelings towards the events, the participants, and the general values or beliefs in question.I asked my friend for his personal opinions of, or reactions to my personal narrative. He said that he also experienced events that could be classified as culture shock. Added to that, my friend stated that in the beginning, he was not very sure of the appropriate term for such experiences. Only upon reading my personal narrative did he know that they were part of a phenomenon called culture shock. He said that my personal narrative might give him some advice on how to handle culture shock. Here are some of the excerpts of the dialogue (translated from Arabic). The first part is a discussion of my experiences of culture shock.Friend: So culture shock is the right term f or such things. When I left the airport, I really did notice that people like to walk in the street which is not a common sight in our country. It was embarrassing in the first instance but in due time I found it to be a common practice here.Omeir: I was also embarrassed but when I began to ask my classmates why people usually walk in the streets, I was somehow enlightened. In the case of Australia, for example, walking is simply an expression of either friendship or liberty. It is an expression of friendship when a person walks with another person; an expression of liberty when a person exercises his right to privacy. This was an uncommon sight in our country since most people have cars.Friend: What about that instance when you saw that a female professor taught a predominantly male class? This is impossible in Saudi.Omeir: I found it very interesting, although shocking at first glance. It was not very bad as you have said in our previous conversation. Female students in the univer sity are educated as much as their male counterparts.Friend: It seemed that you are beginning to understand the workings of Australian culture. I also understand some aspects of Australian culture like religion, dance, music, etc. This is part of my role as a graduate student studying abroad. In my opinion, they ought to be learned, not for self’s sake but for the sake of respect.Omeir: That is true. Having a right attitude towards a foreign culture is a must when studying abroad. Understanding the dynamics of an alien culture, though horrifying or embarrassing in many instances, should be viewed with an unbiased eye. This is the primary and first rule of culture respect.Friend: Personally, I am still bothered by cultural practices here in Australia. What is your personal reaction?  Omeir: After some time, through constant communication with the students of the university, I found those practices to be not embarrassing anymore. Although it is far from acceptance, that is, p articipation in the cultural activities itself, it gave me an avenue to view things from the perspective of those who are members of that particular culture. I remembered that in my undergraduate years, there was a term to describe this phenomenon. Well it’s unimportant.The second set of excerpts is about the resolution phase of the problem (how we went about researching and responding to the problem through a thorough self-study). Here are some of the excerpts of the conversation.Omeir: One of my subjects introduced to me a method for assessing my problems, in this case about culture shock. I was really surprised that personal experiences, guided with some research materials can really result to clear grounded knowledge.Friend: How was that so?Omeir: Well, experiences serve as the grounding point of all theoretical problems in a field of subject for example. In my case, when I analyzed many of my experiences, I found out that there are methods or techniques that can be used to reduce it. It was not only first hand knowledge, it was knowledge applied. Academic journals related to my inquiry were very useful.Friend: You mean that those personal experiences were transformed into a problem. And that these problems were put in a table of inquiry. And that based from this inquiry, you were able to learn some methods to reduce that problem (culture shock).Omeir: Precisely, I have learned that constant interaction with other people who came from different cultural settings is a plus in absorbing culture shock. Nonetheless, because interaction is mostly done in conversations, I am forced to learn some of the appropriate gestures and idioms to use. In such way, I am able to communicate and express my concerns to my foreign friends. I also researched some of the strategies for reducing culture shock. I intend to share it with some of my friends who are currently experiencing culture shock.Friend: I have learned many things from this conversation. I will follow yo ur advice with regard to managing culture shocks†¦Reflective Response to the DialogueNote that in the first lines of the script, I established the fact that both my friend and I are located in the same cultural setting (Saudi Arabia). The experience which I described to my friend served as a stimulating factor to enable him to judge the validity of my experience; through his own personal experiences. The next dialogue was about the nature of Australian culture (or culture in general). This dialogue cleared some of the misconceptions of culture. Added to that, it was also implicitly stated that culture shock is a natural response of graduate students working abroad.This usually helps the interviewee erase his earlier conceptions of Australian culture. Exposure and discussion shed light to some of the most puzzling things about Australian culture (it is natural for a foreigner to be puzzled to a foreign culture). The second part of the interview is the resolution phase of the pro blem. Here I shared some of the ways to reduce culture shock (culture shock management). I also introduced problem-posing vignette as a preliminary method in assessing personal experiences which can be theoretically substantial.ConclusionBased from the rigors of personal experiences, I was able to communicate to my friend the basic steps in problem or inquiry formation. Because problems in the academe are usually theoretical in nature (form), there is a tendency for personal experiences to be treated as personal biases. In this task, I was not only able to give some advice on how to manage culture shock (culture shock reduction) – this is a form of help to a friend who really want to reduce the effects of culture shock (as I had indicated in the question of the problem-posing vignette section), I was also able to give my friend a systematic method in analyzing problem-posing vignettes.   Added to that, I was able to learn that problem-posing vignettes can be a useful tool i n transforming personal experiences into theoretically sound propositions.ReferencesBochner, S.
